Sanguine/Bloedrood. Luc Tuymans on Baroque

Marten Pepijn (1575-1643) was an Antwerp painter who worked in the style of Rubens. In 1600 he had become a freemaster. This painting must have been executed during the last months of 1632, as van Dyck left for England at the beginning of April of that year. Marten Pepijn is presented in modest black clothes against a brown background. This makes his face even more impressive. His shiny forehead, thin pepper-and-salt hair, his choppy beard and lively gaze are painted very smoothly and lifelike. The painting was enlarged several times. This is visible, for example, just above van Dyck's signature.
