During the cultural city festival Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens Inspires, the M HKA, the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, juxtaposes the spirit of the baroque masters with the vision of contemporary top artists. With the exhibition Sanguine/Bloedrood (Blood Red), curator Luc Tuymans aims to overwhelm the visitor by placing key works from the baroque of, among others, Francisco de Zurbarán and Caravaggio, in dialogue with works by classical contemporary masters, such as On Kawara and Edward Kienholz, as well as new works by contemporary stars such as Zhang Enli, Takashi Murakami, Michaël Borremans, Sigmar Polke and Tobias Rheberger.

GETTING THERE

ON FOOT OR BY BIKE

The museum is located at the ‘Gedempte Zuiderdokken’, a 20 minutes’ walk from the historic center. By bicycle, the museum is easily accessible from both city and surrounding municipalities. For example, you can cycle along the quays (‘Kaaien’) with their beautiful and safe bike path. Bicycle Junction 59 (Fietsknooppuntennetwerk Antwerp) is nearby. Visit Fietsnet’s websitefor more information on these ‘fietsknooppunten’ or cycling nodes (in Dutch). Cycling is often the fastest way to traverse the city.

  • With your own bike
At the Gedempte Zuiderdokken and at the museum, you can attach your bike to railings. Ensure you have a good bike lock, since there’s no surveillance.
  • Blue-bike
At the train stations Antwerp Berchem and Antwerp Central, bicycles are available 24/7. A subscription only costs 10 euros per year, per bike rent you pay 3 euros. All info can be found on the website of Blue-bike. National railways NMBS also offer a combined ticket Train + Bike Rental in Antwerp Central.
  • Velo
Currently, you can find 1800 bikes in Antwerp's city centre, spread over more than 150 Velo stations. This gird will expand even further in the following years. At Velo, you can buy a pass for a day (€ 3.60), a week (€ 8), or a year (€ 36). The first half hour of each ride is free. More information about Velo can be found on their website.
